With a simple glance, one main aspect of Saipan’s flora is seen all throughout the island: the coconut tree. Given our location along side a tropical climate, the coconut tree has thrived on this island for as long as Saipan existed. Its extensive history spans past its appearance as its fruit, the coconut, has entered into our islander culture in numerous ways; in many ways, the coconut tree and its fruit may have the most uses in terms of utilizing its resources. For instance, the flesh of the coconut is gelatin-like, nutritious, and sweet; it could also be used for milk and flour if manipulated correctly. Within the coconut is its water, or what we know as coconut juice. This is by far the most well-known part of a coconut as it provides a refreshing, sweet, and fulfilling beverage in a handy container– the coconut itself. Coconuts also contain oils which have seen its use in hair products and even our cooking. Lastly, the coconut shell itself has a wide variety of uses: it may be used as a place to cook or even decoration if crafted. The list goes on and on for the benefits and uses of coconut trees and coconuts, thus showing why it has seen a huge influence on our culture and our everyday lives. The next time you see a coconut, try to list as many things that it could be used for: I guarantee that list will see no end.
