Bikes were originally invented in 1817. Before bicycles, carriages and horses were most common. These methods of travel were largely dependent on horses. As a result, land travel was particularly expensive. However, bicycles, and their mass production, allowed people to travel the land quickly and cheaply. With one purchase, they now had a vehicle that they did not have to feed, rent, or train.
